A part-time salary as an hourly rate

Convert a part-time annual amount with the hours that job actually schedules, not a 40-hour week.

Short answer

Use the part-time weekly hours in the same formula. A $40,000 salary at 20 hours and 52 weeks is $38.46 an hour, not the $19.23 you get from a fake 40-hour week.

Hours first

Ask how many hours the salary is built on. If the posting says 0.5 FTE and the employer’s full time is 40 hours, start from 20, then confirm. Some “half time” jobs are 18 or 19.5 hours. The label is not the input.

Then multiply by paid weeks and divide, exactly as with a full-time salary. Benefits that exist only above a certain number of hours are outside the rate. Compare them separately so a slightly higher hourly number does not hide a missing benefit.

Examples

  • $40,000, 20 hours, 52 weeks

    1,040 hours. $38.46 an hour.

Common mistakes

  • Halving a full-time hourly rate instead of dividing the actual salary by the actual hours.
